About Mark R. May

I was born in Detroit, MI and grew up in the blue collar suburbs. Spent the majority of my childhood and teen years playing competitive hockey winning National and International titles. I also played football and ran track where I earned all-state honors in both. I attended Central Michigan University on a ROTC Scholarship and commissioned into the U.S. Army as an Infantry 2LT in 200. I deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I later competed in the 2016 Best Ranger Competition.

My interests and hobbies include spending time with my beautiful wife and kids, crushing the gym, bow hunting, fishing, riding my Harley, watching movies, and eating. Fitness has always been an important part of my life since I was a little kid, training and competing in multiple sports. Getting on stage and competing has been a lifelong goal that I have recently fulfilled and can’t wait to get on the National stage. Fitness and bodybuilding have opened doors to a healthier and better lifestyle for me and my family.

What are your fitness goals?

My short term goal is to build and prepare to step on a National stage in summer of 2019. My long term goal is to achieve my pro card in Classic Physique and be an ambassador of the sport, to teach and train other individuals how to properly train and live a better lifestyle.

Why did you start competing?

I started competing to fulfill a lifetime goal of getting in the best shape of my life and stepping on stage.

What do you enjoy most about competing?

My favorite part about competing is the competition and camaraderie amongst fellow competitors. No one trains to be 2nd Place. I love putting in the work, staying disciplined to the diet, and watching my body transform.

Who inspires you and why?

My wife is my biggest inspiration. She is a fighter and just an all-around go getter. She inspires me to be a better person, husband, and father through her extreme dedication and work ethic in any task or life challenge that faces her.

How do you stay motivated?

My family is my biggest motivator, the last thing I ever want to do is let them down. They push me to my limits and keep me motivated in everything I do, whether it’s in my career as a Soldier or supporting me in preparation for competition.

What are your favorite exercises and why?

My favorite exercise is anything back. I love the feel of the pump and tightness you get in your back when you train hard.

What is your favorite cheat food?

5 Guys Triple Cheeseburger.

What is your favorite health and fitness quote?

“Train to be the Best” - Jay Cutler

If you could give one piece of advice about dieting, what would it be?   Find a plan that works best for you and your body. Everybody is different. Once you start, stay true to your plan and be disciplined.

If you could give one piece of advice to new athletes or people just getting into fitness, what would it be?

Be consistent in your training and diet. Rome wasn’t built overnight. We live in an era where everybody wants the fast, easy way to achieve results. There are no secrets to success, train hard, eat right, have fun!
